GREG WARD: Phonic Juggernaut Thirsty Ear, 2011 POSTMODERN JAZZ – Excellent trio led by a young alto saxophonist with a questioning sound. Damion Reid’s restless, dynamic drumming and Joe Sanders’ spot-on bass give Ward a solid platform for solos, and the long compositions have plenty of room for everybody to stretch out. Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6 1. 11:26 – strolls outside: probing sax, oh-so careful bass, drums roll all over it 2. 9:55 – sneaks into a really great beat: high sax examines every angle 3. 11:13 – slow, melancholy… trio slumps forward together, very fine sax solo 4. 8:46 – upbeat thump: sax reaches out, stuttering bass solo 5. 7:16 – slow start, comes together into lumpy 3-way give-and-take 6. 6:14 – soft start into a low, urgent pulse; sax runs the maze 7. 6:18 – Andrew Bird tune: bowed bass, techno beat & hazy effects drift in/out [ Fo ] - January 2012 |
