JAMES CARTER ORGAN TRIO: At the Crossroads Emarcy, 2011 SOUL JAZZ – This kicks ass. Sax master Carter tears it up in a slick, slightly modernized take on that classic, greasy organ trio sound that bridges bop, blues and soul. Several tracks have guitar or extra horns, and singer Miche Braden has three fine cuts. It’s got fire, it oozes the blues, and Carter sounds fuckin’ awesome on everything. Play it now! All great. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 12 1. 6:50 – hot! jumpin’ uptempo blues: sax digs in; quick guitar, really clicks 2. 3:20 – slow film-noir drag: organ & sax creep about 3. 5:26 – dragging countrified r&b: sax smears and testifies, lots of soul 4. 5:22 – jump blues: hot vocals, naughty lyrics, great bari sax! 5. 7:04 – nice ‘n’ easy: sax wails all over a ballad tempo, organ chills it down 6. 7:24 – solo organ intro, then tough walkin’ blues: everybody gets some 7. 7:00 – uptempo stomp: bar-walkin’ sax goes insane over a hot drum beat 8. 5:09 – cool mystery-bossa, soprano sax plays it coy, second half heats up 9. 4:19 – straight-up blues, easy tempo, strong vocal & tuff horns 10. 7:35 – Duke Ellington gospel, lukewarm male vocals but sax solo is strong 11. 5:22 – spiritual: slow & sanctified with excellent vocal, then a joyful bounce 12. 9:53 – slow burn: nasty alto sax, spiky guitar, and some frantic breaks [ Fo ] - January 2012 | ||
