SKALLER/HOLT DUO: Music of Mark Dresser
pfMENTUM, 2010

AVANT-GARDE – Five compositions by the highly-regarded avant bassist Mark Dresser, reconfigured for two keyboards (regular piano, prepared piano, toy piano, melodica, or celeste). As Dresser says in the liner notes, “what [they’ve] done is to deconstruct my deconstructions.”

All quite interesting. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4

1. 5:12 – detuned fragments come in steady drips and briefly onrushing floods
2. 13:09 – striking neoclassical: variations on bold melodic lines, worked in thickets of overlapping tempos; alternates power and delicacy
3. 10:48 – very slow, very open celeste & piano with light, fragile harmony; second half treads oh-so carefully on cymbal percussion
4. 9:37 – pianos drift in, play a warped, winding blues in elastic tempo, go free
5. 12:33 – bluesy abstraction: piano/toy piano/melodica all in there together, alternating with free-flowing piano duet & heavy rhythmic sections
